Emergency Plan Activated in West Flanders to Combat Flooding and Rain – Updates on Yser River

2023-11-09 12:56:00

From Ypres to De Panne, the showers fell and the Yser burst its banks. The provincial emergency plan has been triggered.

On the French border, in the Westhoek region, the Yser overflowed. The fault is the torrential rains which fell in this part of the country.

To escape the disaster, the provincial emergency plan has just been activated. The province of West Flanders will therefore centralize and control the operations which will take place in the coming days.

The goal: to avoid flooding and prevent homes from being affected, but above all, to keep the level of the Yser under control, at its lowest.

For now, the water level is already very high. Some plots of land are completely flooded.

Water and electricity outages may occur

Local authorities monitor all this. Firefighters and civil protection have been hard at work for several days. Sandbags were placed in several places to create dams. Water pumping operations are also underway.

The population was warned via the Be Alerte application. Residents are asked to stay at home and avoid dangerous areas. Openings on the ground floor and in cellars must also be sealed and anything that can be raised must be to avoid other incidents.

The water, gas and electricity supply may also be cut off if the situation becomes increasingly dangerous.

For the moment, the sky is gray in the region, but the weather remains dry. Although heavy rain is expected tonight.

The number 1722 is also activated for local residents who need it.
