Emirates SkyCargo has added two Boeing 747-400F aircraft to its fleet, which is evidence of its strong confidence in the future of the global freight market, despite the current volatile environment.
The cargo arm of Emirates Airlines, the world’s largest international carrier, expects 15 more freighters to join its fleet from announced orders and the passenger aircraft conversion program, in addition to an increase in cargo hold capacity on new passenger aircraft, starting with the Airbus A350 in late summer 2024, followed by aircraft Boeing 777-X the following year.
Over the next decade, Emirates SkyCargo expects to double its current capacity, add more than 20 new destinations to its route network, and provide more flexibility and services to its customers through a fleet of more than 300 wide-body aircraft that includes Boeing 777, Boeing 777F and Boeing 747-400F. Airbus A350 and Airbus A380.

Nabil Sultan, Emirates Divisional Senior Vice President Cargo, said: “Although the current market volatility may make others hesitant, Emirates SkyCargo is forging ahead with its plans. The medium to long term outlook for global air freight shows an upward trajectory with growth in the range of 3-5%. And if we combine Dubai’s strategy to double its foreign trade, where multimodal logistics services will play a major role, and economic activities in the markets in the Gulf regions, West Asia and Africa, the opportunity for Emirates Air Cargo seems clear and certain.
“The two leased 747-400Fs provide us with immediate capacity, while we await delivery of five new 777Fs in 2024 and 2025, and 10 Boeing 777-300ERs from our passenger conversion program over the next five years. We believe, however, that these additional aircraft will not be sufficient. And we will expand our program to quickly and efficiently convert aircraft if we need to.” The two Boeing 747-400Fs chartered on a blanket contract basis supplement Emirates SkyCargo’s operating fleet of 11 Boeing 777F Freighters, which currently operate to Chicago three times a week and Hong Kong nine times a week.

The fleet mix also gives us more flexibility to better serve our customers. Emirates SkyCargo is also investing in developing new products and accelerating digitization and technological innovations. Emirates SkyCargo is the cargo arm of Emirates Airlines, and through its modern hub in Dubai, it transports goods to more than 150 destinations within a global network spanning six continents. The airline provides customers with cargo capacity on its modern fleet of all Boeing 777 and Airbus A380 aircraft, 11 777F freighters and two 747-400F freighters.
Emirates SkyCargo operates two modern cargo terminals in its main hub in Dubai, and provides transit times for goods not exceeding 3 hours. The total capacity of the two stations is estimated at about one million tons annually, with the possibility of increasing it to 1.3 million tons.
