Equalizing Carbon Prices: A Guide to the EU’s Mechanism for Importers and Producers

2023-10-01 16:21:57

This mechanism aims to equalize the price of carbon between European products and imports, underlined the Commission in a press release, noting that this measure is “compatible with WTO rules which encourage global industry to adopt more efficient technologies. ecological and more sustainable.

Thanks to the MACF, “EU climate policies will not be compromised by the relocation of production to countries with less ambitious ecological standards or by replacing European products with more carbon-intensive imports”, explained the European Executive.

The trial phase, declarative but without taxation, will serve as a learning period for all stakeholders (importers, producers and authorities), said the press release.

This phase will allow the European Commission to collect useful information on embodied emissions, and refine the methodology for the final implementation period, which will begin in 2026.

At the same time, the Commission will gradually make detailed tools available to help companies set up the transition mechanism.
