Military OBSERVER from the Institute for Defense Security and Peace Studies (IDSPS) Mufti Makarim said whether or not it will take long to eradicate the Free Papua Organization (OPM), depends on aspects of logistical and other support.
“The question of whether it will take a long time depends on aspects of logistical support and other aspects. “They are only localized in certain areas whose geographical conditions they control as a basis for the movement,” said Mufti to Media Indonesia, Tuesday (16/4).
Mufti explained that the armed movement carried out by TPN OPM occurred with various acts of violence, including those targeting security forces. The reason is that they have certain goals that legitimize the use of these methods.
“The acts of violence not only targeted officers and civilians, but also the infrastructure built by the government,” he stressed.
“The KKB terminology assumes they are a criminal group, so the approach used is law enforcement. “Meanwhile, the OPM assumes they are a separatist movement and the approach used is a military operation,” he added.
Now, said Mufti, a comprehensive approach is needed in terms of development, restoration of Public Order and Security and the threat of separatism, so multi-stakeholder collaboration is needed.
Mufti explained that the government has considerations regarding the status of threats and the type of countermeasures taken.
“I agree with a comprehensive option, so that multi-stakeholder participation can reduce the potential for violence in locations that are hot spot areas,” he said. (Z-3)
