Ethiopia’s Sisay Lemma and Hellen Obiri from Kenya won the Boston Marathon on Monday. Lemma ran the race in 2:06:17 minutes. Defending Kenyan champion Evans Chebet (2:07:22), who had won the past two years, had to settle for third place. Lemma’s compatriot Mohamed Esa came second (2:06:58). 33-year-old Lemma, who won the London Marathon in 2021, ran most of the route alone.

In the women’s race, Obiri defended her title on the undulating course through the US state of Massachusetts into Boston. The Kenyan secured her renewed success with a final sprint and relegated her Kenyan compatriot Sharon Lokedi to second place by eight seconds in 2:22:37 hours. Third place also went to Kenya for two-time Boston winner Edna Kiplagat (2:23:21).
