Are you more of an online or traditional bank? Encouraged by inflation, nearly one in ten French people have their main account in an online bank. The advantage, ten euros in fees per year, against 220 euros on average in a traditional bank.

“There are 64% of French people who choose to turn to an online bank to benefit from cheaper rates”, indicates Basile Duval, the spokesperson for Panorabanques. “The bank card will be free as well as all current operations. Online banks can afford to have very low fees [puisque] everything is centralized in customer service.”

The advantages of online banking

In the aisles of the shopping center, Balthazar, 32, phone in hand, pays for his shopping only with his online banking application where he has placed all his savings. A well-considered decision. “I remember, with the traditional bank, to pay for my credit card. As soon as I exceeded my ceiling a little bit, it amounted to paying hundreds of euros every month whereas online banking is quite negligible, I don’t even notice it”, he testifies at the microphone of Europe 1.

For Raphaëlle, 23, who lives between London and Paris, her online bank has other advantages. “For example, on the app, I have 17.42 pounds that I want to exchange into euros and I exchange it directly on my account. When you exchange, you do not pay an exchange rate whereas before it was It was a hassle to exchange money and you were paying a huge rate on it,” she says.

Not all French people take the plunge

But the vast majority of French people remain loyal to their bank branch like Tom, a 25-year-old computer consultant. “I like physical contact, being able to call a banker if I ever have a problem, it allows you to see it, to exchange, to be able to ask questions freely”, he argues.
