What will be the best European film of the year? The list of nominees has just been announced and the verdict will fall from Berlin on December 9 during a major ceremony organized by the European Film Academy.

So who will succeed ‘Sans Filter’ (‘Triangle of Sadness’) by Ruben Ostlund which won everything last year?

The competition this year is very tough, with no favorites, and therefore many potential winners.

Note in any case a great consistency and unanimity in the votes for the nominations, in particular for the categories “Best European film” and “Best European director” since these are the same five films which meet for the final sprint.

The nominations were announced in an official video in which teenagers from all over Europe, all members of the new European Film Clubpresent all the nominated films and protagonists.

One of the serious contenders is ‘Anatomy of a Fall’ by French director Justine Triet, Palme d’Or winner at Cannes. A captivating film that dissects the life of a couple after their partner’s fatal fall. A very European film, where English and French are spoken, with German actress Sandra Huller, nominated in the “Best Actress” category.

‘The Zone of Interest’ is also one of the most striking films of the year 2023. Chilling and surgical, the film dissects the family life of the head of the Auschwitz camp. A normal life, while we are at the gates of hell. The film shows an abominable normality, the banality of absolute evil. Sandra Huller is also nominated for this film in the “Best Actress” category.

We met exclusively with the film’s director, Jonathan Glazer, in Cannes in May after the Grand Jury Prize was awarded:

Among the other films in smooth ‘Green Border’ made an impression at the Venice Film Festival. A film which denounces the trafficking of migrants between Poland and Belarus… Agnieszka Holland’s film was attacked with hatred by Polish conservatives.

‘Autumn Leaves’ by Finnish Aki Kaurismaki is also in competition, a dramatic and poetic, tender and funny comedy around a couple who is looking for love… and will end up finding it!

Finally, Matteo Garrone’s film, ‘I, Captain’ will also be in the running in the “Best Film” and “Best Director” categories. The edifying story of two young Senegalese boys who cross deserts and seas to pursue their dreams, despite the danger and death that lurks…

The euronews Culture team will be on site in Berlin to the awards ceremony on Saturday December 9.
