Even in decline, mobile gaming still largely dominates the video game sector

Mobile gaming still accounts for the lion’s share of the overall video game market, but the sector suffered a significant drop in revenue last year, according to the latest research from Newzoo. In detail, the video game industry as a whole generated $182.9 billion in 2022, a figure down 5.1% from the previous year.

Mobile gaming accounts for exactly half of this big pie, with $91.8 billion in revenue, but that’s down 6.7%. The second largest segment, that of consoles, also fell but by 3.4% “only”, to 52.2 billion. Despite this slack, Newzoo predicts that the total market will reach $206.4 billion in 2025, representing annual growth of 2.9%.

The Asia-Pacific region is, by far, the first in terms of video game revenues (46%, with nearly $85 billion). The United States and Canada follow with 50 billion (27%). Europe is third on the podium, but by quite a distance, with 18% of income (33 billion).

In this context, we understand a little better the insistence of Microsoft to buy Activision Blizzard King: in the lot, there are certainly the triple A for PC and consoles, but also and especially the mobile games which bring in more than the rest.

Activision Blizzard’s mobile games earn more than the studio’s PC and console games
