Everton FC kept their class on the final day of the English Premier League with a narrow win. The Liverpool club took matters into their own hands on Sunday, beating AFC Bournemouth 1-0 at home. The only goal at Goodison Park was scored by Abdoulaye Doucouré (57th minute).
The Toffees’ win meant Leicester City, who beat West Ham United 2-1, and Leeds United, who lost 4-1 to Tottenham Hotspur, were unable to avoid relegation on their own. Leicester, English champions of 2016, are relegated to the Championship after nine years in football’s top flight.
The English champions Manchester City, who were already established before the match day, lost 0-1 at FC Brentford in London without numerous regular players, including Ilkay Gündogan and Erling Haaland. Liverpool FC, fifth in the final table, had a spectacular exchange of blows with relegated Southampton FC (4:4). Arsenal won, Granit Xhaka scored twice. (here/dpa)
