It’s been three years since Lindsey Vonn retired from the ski circus. Even then, the athlete, who is one of the greatest skiers in history, cited injury concerns as the reason for her retirement. Now the American speaks on Instagram that she is still struggling with injuries to her knee.

“I had a hard time with the pain in my knee. You may have noticed that I haven’t been posting a lot of workout videos lately – that’s why,” Vonn wrote after undergoing surgery.

«The price we pay to do what we love»

The 37-year-old praises the work of the treating doctor and counts on the fact that she can now “fully stretch her leg again”. “This is my last step before a knee prosthesis. I hope that I can use this to bridge a year or two until I get the big operation,” Vonn says, adding: “It’s the price we pay to do what we love. But it’s still worth it.”

The former downhill specialist had previously spoken out and announced that she would still ski professionally today if her body would allow it. Practicing her favorite sport has been causing her pain for years, but she can now cycle again after the operation and is currently undergoing rehabilitation.

During her active career, Vonn repeatedly struggled with injuries. In 2007/2008, despite a torn cruciate ligament, she won five downhill runs and even won the overall World Cup.
In 2013 and 2014, the cruciate ligament in the American’s right knee tore completely.
