It has recently been confirmed that the government has secured statements about mass burials of UN troops in North Korea during the Korean War and is investigating them.

On the 21st of last month, the Ministry of Unification and the Ministry of National Defense visited the prison where a North Korean defector in his 60s was imprisoned and conducted a thorough investigation for about four hours.

Through this, we obtained information on three locations where the remains of US soldiers and Turkic soldiers from the Korean War are believed to have been buried on a large scale, including the area around Gaechon, South Pyongan Province, North Korea.

This is the first time that a specific statement has been made about a large-scale burial site of the remains of UN soldiers in the interior of North Korea, and in particular, it is the first time a specific statement has been made regarding the burial of the remains of the Turkiye Army, which dispatched about 14,000 soldiers during the Korean War.

Afterwards, the related report was also shared with the National Intelligence Service and the National Security Office of the President’s Office.

Prior to this, an official from the UN Human Rights Office in Seoul was also found to have visited the prison at the end of last year and met with the North Korean defector in order to obtain information on South Korean prisoners of war in North Korea.

Regarding this reporter’s statement, the Ministry of Unification stated, “After confirming the facts with the relevant agencies, some of the statements appear to be true to some extent.”

The government plans to further verify the facts through North Korean defectors from the relevant region.

In addition, they announced that, if necessary, they will cooperate with the international community to discuss excavation of remains.
