Six million euros to “protect against major climatic events”. The Regional Health Agency (ARS) announced this Tuesday in a press release that it was releasing an envelope to allow the Bordeaux hospital center (Gironde) to carry out renovation work, although it has been very exposed in recent years. month to heatwaves or bad weather.

“Work to waterproof the terraces and refresh several units (pediatric center and emergency department) can thus be carried out from the start of 2024,” added the ARS, specifying that the pediatric center will be notably equipped with “an air conditioning system”.

44 degrees in the middle of the afternoon

The pediatric day hospitalization service at the Bordeaux University Hospital was confronted at the end of August with very high temperatures in the middle of a heat wave, forcing the hospital to activate a heatwave plan in the face of what the unions described as an “oven”.

According to Sud Santé Sociaux, one of the twenty day hospitalization rooms at Pellegrin hospital, where consultations take place, had displayed a temperature of 44 degrees in the middle of the afternoon. The management had recognized “very high” temperatures but contested this measurement “which was not recorded in the service but on a glass walkway connecting two buildings”.

Infiltrations and puddles on the ground

Recently, after a series of rainy days in November, areas of the Pellegrin hospital presented water infiltrations and puddles on the ground, with basins and sheets to mop up the excess, according to Sud Santé Sociaux.

“There is an urgent need to act,” responded Gilbert Mouden, representative of this union at Pellegrin hospital, on Tuesday. “This money may be coming a little late. This will certainly not be enough to carry out all the work,” he added, nevertheless welcoming a situation that is “changing”.
