His return to France will have been fatal to the crook. This 30-year-old engineer was arrested in early July and will be tried in December by the Paris Criminal Court for fraud and fraudulent entry into a computer system.

Wanted by law enforcement for more than five years, he was arrested on July 10. After passing through the Chessy police station (Seine-et-Marne), he was placed in police custody in Paris in the offices of the cybercrime brigade (BL2C).

It all started in July 2018 when the first complaints were filed in the capital, but also in Yvelines, Doubs and Indre-et-Loire. Since the previous winter, the suspect is said to have implemented a system intended to deceive bank customers.

Banking transactions validated for his benefit, identity theft…

The hacker broke into the computer system of the Parisian real estate giant Nexity and installed fake pages on its website, notably imitating the tax page. Its purpose is to recover the identities and bank details of the victims. “With this information, he picked up his phone and pretended to be their bank adviser and led them to reveal their confidential codes to him. He could thus access their accounts before validating operations for his benefit, ”explains a source close to the case.

The investigators identify four victims for a damage of 11,000 euros and learn that the agencies have managed to block transactions up to 11,613 euros. The investigations revealed that this man also used the stolen identities to open other bank accounts. He managed to seize nearly 25,000 euros and he also took out telephone subscriptions.

The alleged crook is housed near Bezons (Val-d’Oise), but he took refuge in Morocco. At the beginning of July, the police discover that he is finally back in France. Ottman was then summoned and arrested in Seine-et-Marne before being transferred to the premises of the judicial police. During the hearings, this computer engineer denied the facts outright. He was released with a summons to appear in court on December 14.

The “Hello” scam has doubled this year

Since the summer of 2021, telephone scams – say “hello” – with usurpation of the quality of bank adviser have been developing at high speed. “Seemingly elementary, this modus operandi relies on new technologies and is used by teams of criminals who carefully prepare their fraudulent call campaigns. Although difficult to isolate in the overall statistics, these facts are on the increase and could generate significant harm for individuals. These schemes have a fairly good success rate due to advances in the digitization of day-to-day banking procedures, ”says a note from the judicial police.

Officials estimate that the number of these facts observed in France doubled during the first six months of the year 2023. Emblematic example, last February in Paris, a team of thugs was arrested. They used a spy car equipped with an IMSI-catcher to suck up motorists’ phone numbers. They then sent them fraudulent text messages encouraging victims to connect to a fake health insurance site.
