Extraordinary Dance Projects: Experience the Ecstasy of Doris Uhlich’s ‘Sonne’

Dance projects by and with Doris Uhlich usually produce extraordinary results due to the special nature of the participants and the content. The premiere of the production “Sonne” in the Festspielhaus St. Pölten was an excessive, sometimes exhibitionistic performance that culminated in an ecstatic finale. Partly cheers, partly irritation.

At the beginning the stage is almost dark, a cluster sound booms monotonously, then a shadowy figure detaches itself from the laces and floats down. It takes a while for it to become personalized, as this evening, which lasts almost an hour and a half, requires a longer breath in order not to succumb to a hint of long-windedness.

Uhlich performs a series of more or less spectacular actions, stalking around the stage naked in orange-yellow moon boots, which she later covers in thick clouds of mist, satirizing sun god behavior with a blonde beard wig, screaming her heart out and being astonished Audience finally with a stark naked Furioso. And then there is the girl (Romy Nagl), who appears as a child playing ball and initially recites naive children’s songs and later quotes from Uhlich, including: “As a child, I sometimes found the clouds that came from the factories to be more beautiful than real ones Clouds.”

By then it will become clear: it’s about the climate crisis, but not only. In an interview printed in the program booklet, Uhlich explains which sources she worked with. And the repertoire ranges from science fiction to Lars von Trier to depictions of the sun in physics, cultural history, mythology and fine art. Musically, pop culture references can be heard from Madonna’s “Lucky Star” to “Last Beast in the Sky” by Blixa Cash. Not all allusions and cross-references are directly comprehensible. But very immediate passages also remain in the memory, for example when the woman and child sit opposite each other for a long time, looking at each other without saying a word.

“Sonne” is a co-production of the Festspielhaus, Volkstheater Vienna and Theater Rampe Stuttgart. An extended version at the Tyrolean State Theater is also being announced for 2024. The premiere in St. Pölten took place as part of a three-day presentation by the Choreographic Platform Austria (CPA), in which brut Wien, Tanzquartier Wien, Festspielhaus St. Pölten, ImPulsTanz, Osterfestival Tirol and SZENE Salzburg joined forces.
