Mercedes announced new safety and medical cars ahead of the 2022 F1 World Championship.
In F1, Mercedes and Aston Martin will share the duties of safety cars and medical cars from 2021. This continues this year, with the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series taking on the role of official safety car in half of the 2022 F1 World Championship.
The Mercedes-AMG Black Series will replace the Mercedes-AMG GT R, which was supplied as a safety car by Mercedes last year. In addition, the Mercedes MG C 63 S Estate, which has been used in medical cars since 2015, will be replaced with the Mercedes AMG GT 63 S 4MATIC +. According to Mercedes, they are the most powerful editions of these vehicles.
One notable change in the new safety car is the removal of the light bar that was previously on the roof. It was built into the windshield and replaced by a new optical signaling system on the rear spoiler.
The rear license plate also lights up in the relevant color, signaling the driver during the race. Side window lights help spectators on the grandstand confirm when the safety car will enter the pits.
In the cockpit, safety car driver Bernd Mayländer is supported by co-driver Richard Darker. Richard Darker has access to two monitors with all race information and television footage to track the F1 field on the track.
