Fabián O’Neill, former Juventus player, died at 49

International 19 times with Celeste, Fabián O’Neill notably played for Cagliari and Juventus. According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, he succumbed to liver disease.

Of Irish origin, Fabián O’Neill left the Nacional Montevideo in 1996 to join Italy, where he wore the colors of Cagliari, Juventus and Perugia. Friend of Zinédine Zidane in Turin, O’Neill especially marked the Sardinian club, where he played 136 matches (16 goals) between 1996 and 2000. Nicknamed ‘El Mago’ (the magician, editor’s note), he won a title with the Old Lady (2001).

Still according to the transalpine daily, the Uruguayan had alcoholism problems for many years.
