Faced with the strike in 27 grocery stores in Toronto, Metro is asking for help from the Ontario government

As the strike continues at Metro Toronto-area grocery stores, the company says it has called in a conciliation officer to help find a solution to the labor dispute.

The move comes two and a half weeks after Metro workers represented by Unifor began a strike at 27 stores in the Greater Toronto Area.

About 3,700 workers rejected a tentative agreement in late July and have been on strike ever since.

On Tuesday, Metro said Unifor had refused a recent request for a bargaining committee meeting.

However, the union replied that it was waiting for an acceptable offer from the grocer.

According to the Ontario Ministry of Labour, a union or an employer can request the appointment of a conciliator to help them reach a collective agreement.

A previous version of this text, the title of which led one to believe that Metro went to ask for the intervention of a conciliator from the federal government, has been corrected.
