The accident happened around 10:30 a.m. along the Esenweg in the city center of Diksmuide. A van hit four cars and a 61-year-old cyclist. Emergency services attempted to resuscitate the 60-year-old, but the victim died at the scene.

The four occupants of the vehicles involved were taken to hospital, but their condition is not critical.
According to the first elements, it is an attempt to overtake which is at the origin of the deadly chaos caused by the driver of the van. The latter would have hit the left rear of the vehicle in front of her with her right front, causing the terrible chain. The driver even tried to flee, before being caught by residents.
“The victim’s bike was here in six pieces, the shock must have been immense”, declared Artur and Lucine to our colleagues from HLNwho lost their van, hit by the accident while it was parked in front of their home.
The prosecution appointed a forensic pathologist and a traffic expert to investigate the circumstances of the accident.
