FC Bayern Munich makes a mistake when they win at SC Freiburg – twelve men on the pitch

What happened? Bayern coach Julian Nagelsmann wanted to make his substitutions four and five in the 86th minute when the score was 3-1 – Niklas Süle and Marcel Sabitzer were to come on for Corentin Tolisso and Kingsley Coman.

However, after being substituted, Coman mistakenly stayed on the field for 17 seconds, touching the ball in the process.

“Süle came in and I noticed that nobody went out for it,” said Freiburg’s Nico Schlotterbeck on “Sky”:

4: 1 with a change error: Bayern wins a strange game in Freiburg

“I counted and informed the referee, otherwise he probably wouldn’t have noticed.”

Referee Dingert explains change confusion

The referee team around Christian Dingert then clarified the situation after a few minutes of confusion – Coman went off the field, Dingert continued the game with a dropped ball.

“It was a confused situation,” said Dingert on “Sky”: “Bayern initially displayed a wrong number, so the Coman player did not feel addressed. When clarifying this situation, the fourth official missed whether the player really left the field. That’s why a twelfth player was on the field for a short time, which of course shouldn’t be. We noticed that relatively quickly and stopped the game.”

The referee continued: “We’ll note that in the game report. Everything else will be decided by the DFB.” According to Dingert, Bayern’s team manager Kathleen Krüger entered Kingsley Coman’s old number (29 instead of 11) on the change board.

Tolisso had to go to the toilet

Nagelsmann explained the beginning of the confusion with a human need from his player Tolisso, who he had only substituted in the 62nd minute: “It was vague. Coco Tolisso ran in because he had stomach problems.”

It was only from this that the confusion about the Coman replacement could develop: “Then the fourth official displayed the wrong number. King (Kingsley Coman, Anm. d. Red.) didn’t know he had to go down.”

Now the ball is (also) with Freiburg, who, according to the usual procedure, have to appeal against the game evaluation. “I should take my time and watch it again,” said Freiburg’s sporting director Jochen Saier in a first reaction shortly after the final whistle.

Freiburg wants to consider an appeal

He “can’t judge the consequences. Now we all have to calm down a bit and think about it.”

Coach Christian Streich, who got very upset right after the confusion of changes (“Blow it off, what shit here!”), said at the press conference: “I don’t quite understand the objection, I assume that we don’t have to, because there are rules. Otherwise, the floodgates are wide open to speculation. Action should be taken according to the rules – that’s my understanding of jurisdiction.”

objection? This is how Streich and Nagelsmann react to the change chaos

Streich added in the “ARD”: “There must be rules for such a case. And if there are, they will be applied. And we follow the rules.”

FC Bayern had won the game at SC Freiburg 4:1 (0:0). and would only need a maximum of twelve points from six games for the tenth championship in a row.

Does FC Bayern have to worry about the points?

Now the change error could have an impact on the game rating. “This is a rule violation and therefore a case for the sports court,” said “Sky” expert Didi Hamann.

In the Legal and procedural rules of the DFB, paragraph 17, paragraph 4 It says in general: “If a player was not eligible to play or to field a game, the team that culpably fielded this player lost the game 0:2 and the opponent won 2:0. unless play has not been restarted by the referee after the player who is ineligible or ineligible to field has been fielded.”

“That leaves little room for interpretation,” said Hamann: “It’s about the integrity of the league. There are regulations and we can’t say: ‘It only took 20 seconds – nothing happened.’ And next week someone plays three minutes? There are rules. The clubs have a responsibility to know them. They are responsible for how many players are on the pitch. That’s why I think they could lose the points.”

Paragraph 1 states: “Objections to the rating of national games must be submitted in writing to the DFB central administration within two days of the end of the day on which the game took place and must be justified in brief.”

SC spokesman Sascha Glunk later said to the “Bild” request: “We will now take our time to look at the situation, evaluate it, and then make a decision and communicate it within the given time frame by Monday.”

DFB rules: Substitutions are up to the referee

In the meantime, the case is not explicitly described in the football rules of the DFB. There it says usually 3 But: “All substituted players and substitutes are subject to the decision of the referee, regardless of whether they are used or not.”

Which suggests at least a part of the fault of the referee team. Because, it says: “A substitute enters the field only after the substituted player has left the field and after a signal from the referee.” That would then affect Sabitzer.

His emergence could be interpreted as “additional person(s) on the field”. Then Dingert would have had to “take appropriate disciplinary measures” – in other words: warn Sabitzer with a yellow card.

FC Bayern downplays mistakes in substitution

Bayern coach Nagelsmann meanwhile tried to downplay the incident: It’s a bizarre situation that will certainly go down in the history books, but it’s not one that needs to be discussed for days because it wasn’t that dramatic.”

“Mistakes happen, but that wasn’t something that speaks against fair sport,” he said: “It was two crossballs. It wasn’t decisive for the game.” Nagelsmann is therefore not assuming a Freiburg objection. “I spoke to a few people in charge in Freiburg, who can also assess it well,” he said, according to “Sport1”.

But Hamann didn’t want to leave it at that. “I understand what Julian Nagelsmann is saying, but it’s your own fault. They have a coaching staff of twelve or 15 people – you have to see that,” said the “Sky” expert.

Dingert already in action when van Bommel made a mistake

“If a player has been on the pitch for too long, the question naturally arises: Who is to blame? The fourth official? Or Bayern? The DFB will now have to check that well,” said “Sky” expert Lothar Matthäus: “I hope for a fair decision.” Remarkable: Dingert has already been the focus of attention once this season with a mistake in substitution.

In the first main round of the DFB Cup, Mark van Bommel, then coach of VfL Wolfsburg, made a mistake in extra time in the game at Preußen Münster, but Dingert’s team also allowed this violation of the rules without complaint.

Van Bommel made the extra substitution in the 103rd minute, just before the 2-1 (final score: 3-1 aet for Wolfsburg). The game was later scored 2-0 for Munster at the green table.

“Sky” expert Hamann was involved in April 1995 as a player in Bayern’s substitution error in the Bundesliga game at Eintracht Frankfurt (5: 2) – at the time he was the fourth contract amateur who was illegally substituted by Giovanni Trapattoni. Bayern also lost 2-0 at the Green Table.
