Prototype standard-size wheel arches intended to fit F1 cars in wet conditions are set to be tested on the track for the first time after the British Grand Prix.

The FIA announced last year that work was underway to assess the use of these wheel arches to improve visibility in the rain by reducing spray. These would not be a permanent addition to the cars, but could be easily strapped on for wet conditions should they arise before a race or when stopped by a red flag.

Nikolas Tombazis, head of the FIA’s technical department, said the project was launched because of a desire to prevent a repeat of the 2021 Belgian Grand Prix.

Until now, R&D work has been carried out using simulation tools. The Silverstone test will be the first on real F1 cars to collect data.

The test will follow the Pirelli tire test scheduled after the British Grand Prix, which will be the last opportunity to try the prototype slick tires without a heating blanket before a potential vote on their use in 2024.

Pirelli F1 chief engineer Simone Berra has confirmed that after this test wheel arch testing will take place with the participation of Mercedes F1 and McLaren and will be under the control of the FIA and not the engineers of Pirelli.

The test is planned on a single straight line of the small route of Silverstone (baptized National), which will be artificially watered in order to collect aerodynamic data evaluating the impact of the wheel arches. This will serve to inform the ongoing research and development program. Pirelli 2023 rain tires will be used.
