Russia is militarily superior to Ukraine. However, Ukraine has an advantage in house-to-house fighting, according to the chairman of the Bundeswehr Association, Wüstner ARD– Morning Magazine. He therefore expects a guerrilla war.

In view of the situation in Ukraine, the chairman of the Bundeswehr Association, André Wüstner, expects a guerrilla war. “In the cities themselves, in local and house-to-house combat, forces like the ones in Ukraine, with their rocket-propelled grenades and more, are of course superior,” said the lieutenant colonel ARD morning magazine.

Such a prospect could, however, persuade Russian President Vladimir Putin to “barrage these cities with barrels of fire.” He is firmly assuming that Putin will intensify his attack movements and that there will be bitter fighting in the next few days.

Panzerfausts were right decision

Wüstner emphasized that Germany’s decision to deliver Panzerfausts to Ukraine was the right one. But you have to be careful how Putin takes it and that you don’t significantly exacerbate the conflict from outside.

Wüstner said of the planned reinforcement for the Bundeswehr: “Money alone does not help”. Federal Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht is facing major challenges in terms of leadership and management. The procurement system needs to be improved. First of all, there must be an immediate program for the personal equipment of the soldiers with helmets, vests, night vision devices and other things.

Tornado succession needs to be addressed

But it is also important to properly tackle large-scale projects such as the successor to the Tornado fighter plane or the establishment of a fully equipped army division, Wüstner said, “so that we are no longer as naked as we are currently finding it.”

Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced on Sunday a massive increase in military spending in response to the Russian attack on Ukraine. In the 2022 federal budget, a one-time special fund of 100 billion euros is to be created. In addition, Germany will invest more than two percent of its gross domestic product in defense every year.
