Filip Mešár’s Evolution and New Mindset with the Laval Rocket

Filip Mešár, a 22-year-old forward and former first-round pick for the Montreal Canadiens, is redefining his style of play during his third season with the Laval Rocket. Following years of video sessions and tactical adjustments, the Slovak winger is producing points from the interior rather than the perimeter as he enters the final year of his entry-level contract.

Mešár Operates in Final Year of Entry-Level Deal

  • Contract Watch: Operating in the final year of his entry-level deal, Mešár remains under organizational evaluation alongside former prospects who have transitioned elsewhere.

The Two-Year Evolution Under Daniel Jacob

To understand Mešár’s current production of six points through his first nine games, one must look at the extensive developmental groundwork laid by Laval Rocket assistant-turned-head coach Daniel Jacob. RDS reported that Jacob’s work with the young forward involved rigorous video study aimed at curbing perimeter tendencies and instilling defensive zone responsibilities. Jacob acknowledged the player’s natural playmaking skills while emphasizing that success at the professional level required internal tactical acceptance.

“C’est un estifi de bon kid, on veut vraiment que ça marche pour lui,” Jacob told RDS, noting the collective desire within the coaching staff to see the prospect succeed. The pivot from an outside-oriented playmaker to a north-south forward did not happen overnight. It required a systematic overhaul of Mešár’s approach to puck battles, particularly in the lower defensive zone.

Data and the Shift to High-Danger Areas

Analytics present an intriguing layer to Mešár’s development curve. Prior to recent matches, tracking data from Sportlogiq evaluated by RDS showed that the forward’s raw time spent in the low slot had not drastically increased compared to previous campaigns. Yet, the qualitative assessment from the bench told a different story. Jacob observed that the fundamental difference lies in where Mešár initiates his plays, leaning heavily into hard areas rather than floating on the outside.

Despite these improvements, consistency remains a work in progress. RDS noted that Jacob pointed to a recent loss against the Hamilton Hammers where the forward briefly relapsed into old perimeter habits. Maintaining an attack-first mindset—prioritizing net-drive before shooting—remains the baseline requirement set by the coaching staff.

Automatic Habits and the Road to the NHL

For Mešár, the repetitive video sessions have transformed how he processes the game in real time. Selected 26th overall by the Canadiens in the 2022 NHL Entry Draft, the 22-year-old explained to RDS that his defensive reads have unlocked his natural offensive transition abilities.

“En zone défensive, quand je fais ces choses qu’il veut que je fasse, je récupère immédiatement la rondelle et je peux ensuite tomber dans mes forces naturelles,” Mešár explained to RDS, highlighting how defensive zone execution fuels his rush offense. “Je dirais que c’est automatique maintenant dans ma tête. Depuis deux ans, on le travaille, on le pratique, on le répète. Et aujourd’hui, c’est automatique.”

As the organization evaluates its prospect depth—having previously parted ways with former talents such as Sean Farrell, Joshua Roy, Luke Tuch, and William Trudeau—Mešár enters a crucial audition phase. Recognizing that his NHL pathway may require a different stylistic chair than the one he occupied as a junior star, the winger aims to validate the franchise’s initial investment before his contract expires.
