Premiere in Lenzerheide: From December 14th to 17th, the Biathlon World Cup will be in Switzerland for the first time. SRF broadcasts the total of 6 competitions live on TV. In addition, SRG is responsible as “host broadcaster” for the production of the world signal. This presents the crew with some challenges.

From December 14th to 17th, 2023, biathlon competitions at World Cup level will take place in Switzerland for the first time. With a view to the World Championships next winter at the same location, the world’s best biathletes will compete against each other in the “Roland Arena” in Lantsch near Lenzerheide in the sprint, pursuit and mass start disciplines. SRF will broadcast all races live on TV (see overview). SRF biathlon expert Matthias Simmen accompanies the event together with Manuel Köng on the microphone.
The Swiss radio and television company SRG is on site as “host broadcaster” and is responsible for producing the competitions (see box). The World Cup premiere presents the team with challenges: “To a certain extent we are breaking new ground. We were able to gain initial experience on a smaller scale at the European Championships and the Junior World Championships. At the World Cup, however, the requirements are a lot higher,” explains production manager Peter Baer. Around 60 people and 29 cameras will be on duty with him.
The SRG as “host broadcaster”

SRG is the host television producer of the first biathlon World Cup races in Lenzerheide GR. As “host broadcaster”, SRG is responsible for producing the world signal. The world signal is the basis for all TV stations that broadcast the race. Both SRG’s regional language TV channels (SRF, RTS, RSI) and numerous television stations around the world take over the elaborately produced images and broadcast them all over the world. The world signal also forms the basis for transmissions on the Internet. In this way, the SRG makes an important contribution to the global media presence of this Swiss sporting event.
In terms of directing, a biathlon broadcast is more demanding than other sports. “Especially in sprints, athletes are at the start, at the shooting ranges, on the cross-country ski trail and at the finish line at the same time. That’s why it’s necessary to have good consultation with the ‘spotter team’, who tell us what is most interesting from an international TV perspective,” says director Ueli Barmettler.
