The National Organization for Maritime Rescue and Safety of Aquatic Spaces (Onsa) reported that they were found belongings of two of the 23 missing persons since December 17 when they boarded a boat in San Andres, Colombia, bound for Isla del Maíz in Nicaragua.

According to what was reported by the Venezuelan civil association, on December 26 a bag was found with clothes, among other items, which are presumably from Francis Nayarit Cuellar Montilla, 25 years old, and her son Lian Andres Colmenares Cuellar.

The find was made by a Nicaraguan fisherman on the southern coast of Nicaragua, near the river border with Costa Rica, 25 miles offshore. Subsequently, the semi-sunken hull of the ship was located, presumably, about 6 nautical miles from Puerto Limón, Costa Rica, reported Onsa Venezuela on December 27.

192 hours of search

This December 27, the civil association updated information on this case and highlighted that they have searched for the vessel for at least 192 hours, without obtaining results.

“The preliminary inquiries, derived from the accounts provided by the relatives, the weather conditions at the time of departure and the elements found so far, presumably associated with the people who were on board, suggest a capsizing of the ship between the Island of San Andrés (Colombia) and Isla Maíz (Nicaragua), due to the evil, overweight on board (passengers) and other human and technical factors,” said the civil association.

Another thirteen Venezuelans who undertook this journey on October 12 are also missing. Colombian authorities have warned about the danger posed by this route used by migrants as part of their journey to reach the United States.

The Colombian Navy reported that this year the lives of 683 irregular migrants have been saved in the waters of the Archipelago of San Andrés, Providencia and Santa Catalina.

Relatives ask for help

the niece of Victor Aguirre Lopezone of those who disappeared on December 17, shared a video in which he requests help from the authorities to find out what happened to his family member and the rest of the passengers.

“Until now We don’t know anything about what happened to them.We don’t know where they are, what happened to the boat, the captains, nothing about the passengers,” he said.

Two other of the disappeared are from San Rafael de El Piñal in the Fernández Feo municipality, in the south of the Táchira state, according to the newspaper La Nación. This is Jacqueline Velazco Zambrano, a retired nurse, and her daughter, Grecia Yarleni Roa Velazco, who is dedicated to making handmade garments.

According to what was published by La Nación, mother and daughter had allegedly decided to emigrate to the United States to reunite with Jackeline’s husband and father from Grecia.
