Fishing suspended in the Komo Estuary following suspicious fish deaths –

A note signed by the Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, Jonathan Ignoumba, announces the temporary suspension of fishing and aquaculture activities in the Komo Estuary and its tributaries.

Numerous voice notes and videos were widely distributed on social networks throughout the past weekend, reporting dead fish floating in the waters of the restricted area.

The Komo Estuary, the note specifies, covers the area from the Libreville Artisanal Fishing Support Center (CAPAL) to the entrance to the town of Kango.

In a statement read on national television, the Director General of Fisheries, Brice Didier Celce Koumba Mabert recognized that this suspicious mortality of fish began on March 12.

The epicenter of the phenomenon is between the port of Owendo and Ndonguila. Mortality mainly concerns the captain, the sea bass, the machoiran, the humpback, the ground, the trevally and the eel, all fish very popular with the Gabonese.

An emergency information gathering mission was launched by the Minister of Fisheries in the southern part of the Komo Estuary. For its part, the General Directorate of Fisheries and Aquaculture carried out 3 environmental monitoring missions.

Studies of the water, fish corpses and bacteria are underway to determine the causes of the mortality of these fish.

Pending these studies, fishing is prohibited in the area.
