Under stress, teams tend to regress into unhealthy coping mechanisms; these mechanisms are rooted in human evolutionary psychology.

Teams act as a community, instinctively looking for ways to alleviate the collective anxieties of its members. Teams may unconsciously push unwanted roles, such as scapegoats or crew saviors, onto one or more members and get caught in behavior-distorting interactions; Enemies instead of advancing the actual mission.

The two authors of this article explore how to spot these harmful patterns and break the constraints that come with them, and they also illustrate a powerful tool for working with high-level teams: the social graph, or the use of images to represent the team The connections among members, and how they interact with each other. When teams understand the unconscious forces that affect them during times of stress, they are less constrained by those forces and more committed to improving performance.
