A boat captain’s decision in FloridaCutting a parasail’s tow line may have contributed to the horrific Memorial Day accident that killed a young Illinois mother, an expert told the «Miami Herald». In parasailing, a controllable parachute is pulled with a boat using a tow line. The woman and her family had traveled to Florida from Illinois.

Captain worried about the crew

Supraja Alaparthi, 33, went parasailing in the Florida Keys with her son and nephew on Monday, like the «New York Post» reported. As the winds picked up, boat captain Daniel Couch, 49, feared the speeding parasail would sweep his ship and endanger both his crew and family members, according to local police officials.

Therefore, the captain cut the rope that attached the parasail to his boat, with fatal consequences for the woman. She and her children then flew almost two kilometers over the surface of the water.

“That’s the golden rule, don’t cut the leash”

According to a source in the Miami Herald, Captain Couch had hoped to get the three aboard the boat after cutting the line and lowering them. Instead, Alaparthi and the children ended up crashing directly into the Old Seven Mile Bridge. Despite the immediate help of a boatman nearby, the mother died, the nephew survived with serious injuries and her son with minor injuries.

It is still unclear whether the captain’s negligent behavior will lead to charges. “There was no way he should have done that,” said parasailing expert Mark McCulloch (66) to the New York Post. “That’s the golden rule – don’t cut the leash.”
