“For a long time, there are no symptoms… Apart from a sign that should alert you”

Testicular cancer is most common in young men. For Yahoo, Doctor Christian Recchia warned of a simple daily gesture to detect this cancer, the symptoms of which appear late.

Be your own doctor. In a way, this is the message that Doctor Christian Recchia wishes to convey to readers of Yahoo. As he reminds us, cancers do not necessarily strike the elderly. Young men, aged 20 to 40, are also affected, particularly by testicular cancer. But unfortunately, in many cases, these tumors are detected too late, a situation that leads patients to go through chemotherapy, radiotherapy or surgery.

Faced with this observation, he recalls the need to have “a good knowledge of his anatomy” and to feel regularly in order to detect a potential anomaly. In the vast majority of cases, cancer is suspected by finding a palpable mass on the testicle. This mass does not regress over time. It is hard to the touch and usually painless.

Do it right out of the shower

This is why it is essential to be attentive to this first sign. The ideal moment is when you get out of the shower because the heat of the water relaxes the skin of the testicles, which facilitates palpation. In front of a mirror, they must be examined, one after the other, by rolling the gland between the thumb and the four fingers. The four fingers are placed under the testicle and the thumb above. Note that it is normal for one to be larger than the other.

Genetics must also be taken into account. “If your father, your grandfather or your uncle suffered this pathology, be extremely vigilant and have an examination by a health professional every year”.

As explained by doctor Christian Recchia, tobacco, alcohol or any other drug is an element provoking it. According to him, these substances, added to “direct trauma” and to “genetic aspects”, can accelerate the cancer process. In total, 3,000 cases are detected each year in France. But let the most anxious be reassured, deaths linked to this cancer are very rare.
