The former head of the Thunder Bay police service was handcuffed and appeared on Friday as part of an investigation begun in December 2021 which had already led to the arrest of two members of the police force.

Sylvie Hauth, 57, faces four charges for obstructing the work of a police officer, breach of trust and obstructing justice (twice), the Ontario Provincial Police listed in a brief press release.

Ms. Hauth, who led Thunder Bay police from 2018 until her suspension in June 2022, was released on conditions and is due back in court on May 7. Note that after her suspension, she decided to resign in January 2023.

According to court documents cited by the Thunder Bay News Watchthe police chief is accused of making false statements before the Thunder Bay Police Board of Directors and the Ontario Civilian Police Commission.

Earlier this week, the force’s lawyer, Holly Walbourne, was also arrested on charges of obstruction of justice and breach of trust. Last year, Sergeant Michael Dimini was arrested for obstruction, breach of trust and assault.

The Thunder Bay police had already found themselves under the microscope in recent years for their handling of files concerning First Nations members and for the lack of efficiency of their leaders.
