A court controlled by Myanmar’s ruling military junta on Wednesday sentenced former leader Aung San Suu Kyi to five years in prison, sources familiar with the proceedings said.
It is the first ruling amid 11 other corruption charges that Suu Kyi faces under the anti-corruption law. Each of these charges carries a possible sentence of up to 15 years in prison.
Journalists and members of the public were prevented from attending the trial.
Suu Kyi, 76, faces prison terms totaling more than 160 years.
