FPÖ – Deimek: State Secretary Tursky’s AI plans are a dangerous threat Liberal Parliament Club

Pre-authoritarian fantasies of the ÖVP are to be rejected

Vienna (OTS) The EU is currently dealing with the guidelines and framework conditions for “artificial intelligence” (AI) – but ÖVP State Secretary Tursky also recently revealed his plans for this. He therefore advocates – like ÖVP National Council President Sobotka before him – for the approval of AI applications by a national approval authority. FPÖ technology spokesman NAbg. Gerhard Deimek warns of this development: “When Tursky speaks here of algorithms and their potential danger, then unfortunately God see how clueless the State Secretary for Digitization is basically. An algorithm cannot be good or bad. It always depends on the user. Tursky’s desire to have algorithms approved by a national authority is a dangerous threat. It cannot be that an authority makes a classification here.”

If some algorithms or software are now banned in Austria, that does not mean that they cannot be used anyway – for example using “virtual private networks” (VPN). “If one or the other criminal activity is committed with AI products, then we have corresponding laws that apply here. The demonization of some technologies or algorithms, which the ÖVP apparently wants, is nothing more than the pre-authoritarian fantasies of a party that sees its own power dwindling and would like to cling to power with the help of technology, even though its days are actually numbered “, so FPÖ technology spokesman NAbg. Gerhard Deimek.

A clear legal framework would have to be created for the use of AI. At the same time, awareness of the risks involved in using ‘artificial intelligence’ instruments must be raised. It is the task of politics to create the appropriate regulations: “In the case of AI, too, the ultimate responsibility must lie with the person who uses these programs. Final decisions must always be made by people. Shifting responsibility to machines shouldn’t happen,” said Deimek.
