France: Overtook Russia to become the world’s second largest arms exporter – 2024-03-15 06:48:24

For the first time, France is the world’s second largest arms exporter, as it saw its international sales increase by 47% in the period 2019-2023, compared to the period 2014-2018, according to a report by the International Peace Research Institute ( Sipri), published today.

This development is due to the fact that France overtook Russia, whose arms exports decreased – apparently due to international sanctions – impressively (-53% between 2019 and 2023). France, representing 10.92% of international arms sales, is slightly ahead of Russia, which fell to 10.54%, Sipri reports.

In first place is the United States whose international sales increased by 17% and now represent 42% of the total. China (5.8%) and Germany (5.6%) are ranked 4th and 5th. These five countries account for 75% of international arms sales.

France has followed a more active international policy in recent years, says the Sipri report, noting that countries that buy from France appreciate the opportunities for military and industrial cooperation and that French weapons are “ITAR free”, meaning they are not subject to in US arms sales regulations.
