Fred Armisen Brings “Comedy for Musicians” Tour to Boston, Globe Reports

Comedian and musician Fred Armisen is bringing his hybrid stage act, Comedy for Musicians But Everyone Is Welcome, to Boston’s historic Wilbur Theatre for a two-night run on October 12 and 13, 2026, featuring a live drum kit and guitar setup to illustrate observational music humor, The Boston Globe reported.

Fred Armisen Brings Musician Comedy Show to Boston

  • Fred Armisen performs his musician-centric comedy show at The Wilbur on Tremont Street in Boston on October 12 and 13, 2026, with tickets priced between $47 and $55.
  • The stage features physical instruments like drums and guitars to ground impressions of musical genres and equipment quirks, following a template established by his 2018 Netflix special Standup for Drummers.
  • Alongside his live tour, Armisen balances television work, including portraying Uncle Fester in the second season of Netflix’s Wednesday and reuniting with Carrie Brownstein for the Portlandia: A-O Rewatch podcast.

The Wilbur Theatre, a 1,093-seat venue built in 1914 and designated a Boston Landmark, acts as the backdrop for Armisen’s performance. Opening sets begin at 7:30 p.m. for both nights, with ticket prices ranging from $47 to $55.

Armisen’s comedic approach centers on specific cultural minutiae rather than broad generalities. While the title explicitly targets musicians, the material is designed to translate to non-musicians in the room. He explained to The Boston Globe that the premise relies on subjects he finds inherently funny, hoping the specificity resonates rather than alienates.

From Chicago Post-Hardcore to Saturday Night Live

Before his transition into full-time comedy following a 1998 stint interviewing musicians at South by Southwest, Armisen spent years behind the drum kit. He played in the Chicago post-hardcore band Trenchmouth from 1988 until the group disbanded in 1996, later performing as a background musician with Blue Man Group. That musical background directly informs his current stage shows.

In 2002, Armisen joined Saturday Night Live as a featured player, earning a promotion to the main cast in 2004. During his 11-season run on the NBC sketch series, he developed memorable characters, including a Tito Puente impression and home-studio parodies that foreshadowed his later work on IFC’s Portlandia.

Project / Era Key Role Notable Medium
Trenchmouth (1988–1996) Drummer Post-Hardcore Band
Saturday Night Live (2002–2013) Cast Member / Featured Player NBC Sketch Series
Late Night with Seth Meyers (2014–2024) Bandleader (The 8G Band) Late Night Television
Wednesday (Ongoing) Uncle Fester Netflix Series

Armisen Balances Netflix Filming with Former Late Night Role

Armisen’s schedule extends beyond stand-up comedy. He spent a decade leading The 8G Band on NBC’s Late Night with Seth Meyers from its 2014 premiere until August 2024, when budget cuts eliminated the show’s live house band. That final season earned Armisen and associate music director Eli Janney a Primetime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Music Direction.

Currently, Armisen divides his time between touring and international film sets. He is filming the new season of Netflix’s Wednesday in Ireland, where playing Uncle Fester requires roughly an hour and a half in the makeup chair each morning. Meanwhile, he and co-creator Carrie Brownstein have revisited their sketch roots through the Portlandia: A-O Rewatch podcast, though Armisen noted that shooting a brand-new season of the sketch show remains unlikely due to the logistical demands of production.
