Tahar Rahim Recalls Student Poverty in Paris
During his appearance on Quotidien, Tahar Rahim responded to questions from Yann Barthès regarding recent images of youth demonstrations across France. “When I see them, it gives me hope because I was a student and I knew student precarity at a time when it was very complicated,” Rahim stated on the program, as reported by TV Magazine.
The actor recounted walking through Paris near the Grande Mosquée de Paris, where food distribution for students revealed the scale of financial distress. “I see a queue that goes all the way around the neighborhood and I say to myself: ‘Ah yes, to that extent!'” Rahim added.
Stakes of the High School Protests
The nationwide mobilization involves students from across France demanding additional human and financial resources for the country’s 3,700 secondary schools, which serve approximately 2.2 million adolescents. Protestors have specifically criticized unreplaced teacher absences, excessive scheduling loads, and the deteriorating condition of educational facilities.
“When I see that, I have hope and I understand them,” Rahim said during the broadcast. “In truth, they must keep this idealistic light because what they are doing is that they are fighting not only for themselves, for their civil rights. If we pay taxes, it is so that our schools get better. And also they do it for our children, for the whole educational body, for the teachers, for everyone, for the future. So yes, I am wholeheartedly with them.”
Theatrical Release Context
Tahar Rahim’s television appearance coincided with promotional rounds for the upcoming cinematic adaptation of Victor Hugo’s Les Misérables, directed by Fred Cavayé, scheduled for release on October 14, 2026. In the film, Rahim plays the role of Javert.
The protests have persisted for multiple days, resulting in numerous confrontations with law enforcement and more than 6,500 detentions nationwide.
