Mavrik Bourque: Adapting to a New Role with Nashville Predators

Mavrik Bourque is transitioning to the center position after the Nashville Predators acquired him from the Dallas Stars; he signed a six-year, $33 million contract extension in July and has taken on more responsibilities under head coach Andrew Brunette.

The 24-year-old forward is adapting to a new tactical reality in Tennessee following the July 1 trade that sent him and defenseman Ilya Lyubushkin to Nashville in exchange for a 2nd-round pick in 2027 and a 3rd-round pick in 2028. Predators general manager Chris MacFarland swiftly locked down the Quebec native with a contract averaging $5.5 million annually just three days after his arrival, signaling immediate organizational faith in the franchise’s ongoing reconstruction.

Bourque Adjusts to Nashville System Despite Slow Offensive Start

Brunette wasted no time deploying his new forward in heavy situations, logging ice times of 17:25, 18:05, and 19:48 across the first three games of the season. Yet the transition has not instantly translated into a flurry of offensive production. Bourque has registered a single assist so far.

Nashville Predators Center Mavrik Bourque Talks About Playing His Former Team

C’est une assez grosse adaptation pour moi, Bourque acknowledged to reporters following a Predators practice in Brossard, noting he knew no one upon arriving in Nashville and is adjusting to a distinct team system.

Brunette echoed that assessment, pointing to the inherent complexities of shifting a young forward into the middle of the ice at the NHL level.

Stepping Out of the Shadows in Nashville

During his time with Dallas, Bourque developed behind a crowded forward group featuring names like Wyatt Johnson, Jason Robertson, Mikke Rantanen, Matt Duchene, and Roope Hintz. Last year, in his second full campaign with the Stars, he recorded 41 points—including 20 goals and 21 assists—across 82 games, eventually earning wing minutes on one of the top two lines of a Stanley Cup contender.

In Nashville, however, Bourque finds himself anchoring the center ice alongside linemates Ross Colton and Jonathan Marchessault. That positional pivot brings elevated expectations and a clearer path to feature minutes.

Je me sens prêt à jouer un plus grand rôle, Bourque stated, reflecting on his status as a 2020 first-round pick for Dallas.

Marchessault expressed confidence in his new teammate’s trajectory, emphasizing that Bourque’s prior track record in the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League and the American Hockey League points toward untapped offensive upside now that he is with Nashville.

Mavrik a toujours produit, Marchessault said.
