They did not come to fight, but to politely settle their accounts with Carrefour. This Tuesday, May 9, 2023, the FRSEA and JA of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes organized a union action in front of the Ecully hypermarket, near Lyon, to protest against imports of foreign beef. Coming from different departments, the breeders discussed with store managers before going to meet consumers.
Labeling error or fraud?
“In April, we inspected the meat shelves of several Carrefour stores in the region,” says Jonathan Janichon, head of the FRSEA’s beef section. We have seen a lot of imports. And in a store [pas celui d’Ecully, NDLR], we found labels bearing the VBF logo with the words “born, raised and slaughtered in Germany” – only the cutting took place in France. It’s the drop of water too much! »
To the managers of the Ecully hypermarket, the breeders explained the scissors effect they are experiencing: “Our animals, born a year ago in a context of soaring prices, were expensive to produce, and today distribution puts pressure on prices, in particular thanks to imports, denounces Jonathan Janichon. However, our prices cannot be the eternal variable of adjustment: there may be a little margin to trim elsewhere, on marketing for example…”
Future threatened
Insisting on the need for a long-term vision for young people, Justin Chartard, regional manager for meat at JA, agrees: “The future of the sector is being played out today, because those who stop farming will not recover. animals on their farm, even if we run out of French meat in twenty years… You have a responsibility! »
The director of the hypermarket, Christophe Benoit, talks about the work already done to promote French origin in the butcher’s section, and the efforts made to develop the Carrefour “Prim’herbe” sector, which pays producers better. “But I hear that we can always do better,” he admits.
The FRSEA says it is “ready to work” with the brand, and promises to monitor all players in the GMS, but also out-of-home catering.
