From the International Space Station the object that fell into a house 2024-04-17 09:01:25

On March 8, a resident of a city in the state of Florida found, and uploaded to social networking site X, a photo capturing a gray, semi-cylindrical object that he said “went through the roof and two stories” of his home, adding that it almost to beat his son. He delivered it to the space agency.

The latter confirmed yesterday Monday the scenario assumed at the time: the object came from a load of spent batteries, ISS waste discarded in 2021 and it was then thought that it would re-enter the Earth’s atmosphere and be destroyed “without risk” to anyone.

The object, weighing about 700 grams, is made of a metal alloy called Inconel.

NASA said it will conduct an investigation to understand why the object was not completely destroyed when it entered the Earth’s atmosphere and whether it needs to change practices and procedures.

Similar incidents have already been recorded in the past.

In 2022, Australian authorities confirmed that charred debris that fell on a sheep farm came from a SpaceX spacecraft.
