Gasoline Prices in Quebec: Regional Variations and Strategies for Savings

The price of gasoline varies considerably by region. In Trois-Rivières, the price at the pump is $1.58, while in St-Étienne-des-Grès, it is slightly lower at $1.45. A gas station in Grand-Mère offers the most advantageous rate, set at $1.43.

For many motorists, this cost justifies waiting a few minutes before refueling.

According to CAA-Quebec, the acquisition cost for retailers is approximately $1.43, aligned with the price at the pump. Despite this, the convenience store in question makes a profit. Sylvie Michaud, manager of the Ultramar on Avenue de Grand-Mère, emphasizes that the drop in the price of gasoline encourages new customers to frequent the station. A customer met by TVA Nouvelles also said he would opt for this service station rather than that of St-Étienne-des-Grès, historically known for its low prices.

In the Mauricie region, the retailer margin amounts to approximately twelve cents per liter, marking an upward trend over the years. The manager explains that prices are decided at the higher level and that price surveys allow the final determination.

Variations of 15 to 20 cents per liter are observed not only in Mauricie, but across Quebec. The highest prices are found in Bas-St-Laurent, while deals are available in Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean.

According to Normand Mousseau, director of the Trottier Energy Institute, École Polytechnique, the price of a barrel of oil should not experience significant fluctuations in 2024, thus offering a respite to motorists.
