Georgian Airways Faces Backlash for Flights to Russia: A Non-Political Airline Caught in Political Controversy

The Georgian airline Georgian Airways reported that after the decision to start flights to Russia, a “dirty campaign” began against it. In its statement, the airline emphasized that it is not a political organization and must “follow the will of the Georgian people.”

“A dirty campaign has been launched against the airline. We are undeservedly “decorated” with unacceptable epithets. The most painful are the attacks connected with our patriotic feelings. We are called traitors because we think about operating flights towards Russia,” Georgian Airways said in a Facebook statement (owned by Meta, which is recognized as extremist in the Russian Federation and banned).

The statement notes that the decision on the resumption of air traffic between countries and the abolition of the visa regime is made not by airlines, but by states. “We are not a political organization, therefore, we do not make political decisions. We must fulfill the will of the Georgian people,” it says.

On May 10, Russian President Vladimir Putin lifted the ban on flights to Georgia for Russian airlines, and also canceled the visa regime for Georgian citizens. On May 16, Georgian Airways received permission to fly with Russia. On the same day, the company announced the start of flights to Moscow from May 20, ticket prices start at $345 (27.8 thousand rubles).
