German publishing house Gestalten officially launches a new book “Modernist Icons”.

The content of this book is centered on mid-century modernist aesthetics and covers interior decoration, architecture, and design. Through project studies and images, readers can understand the influence of this aesthetic on modern furniture and design styles, and the reasons for its continued popularity.

Mid-century popular modernism is a design style extended from the German architectural style Bauhaus from the mid-1930s to the end of the 1960s. It emphasizes minimalism and cleanliness, the use of lines, and the use of indoor and outdoor spaces. This style gradually emerged after the end of World War II. The optimism generated by the people after the war, the progress of scientific and technological research, and the focus on practical items were all important factors for this style to become popular culture.

In addition to the history, the book features the work of architects including Le Corbusier, Mies van der Rohe, Lina Bo Bardi and John Lautner, as well as essays covering a wide range of topics, with titles such as The Early Years: Finding the Roots of Modernity”, “Post War: an Era of Optimism and Hope”, “Less is a Bore: Rethinking the Misconceptions about Mid-century Modern Design”, etc.

“Modernist Icons” is now available on Gestalten’s official website, priced at £55. Interested readers may wish to pay more attention.
