In the world, almost 50 million people live in slavery, of which 1.89 million are Russians. This is stated in the new Global Slavery Index (Global Slavery Index), which was presented by the human rights organization Walk Free together with the International Labor Organization and the International Organization for Migration, writes “Kommersant”.

Modern slavery refers to any “case of exploitation in which a person cannot refuse or leave because of threats, violence, coercion, abuse of power, or deceit.”

In the left table are the countries with the highest prevalence of slavery. On the right – with the lowest.

Of the nearly 50 million people in slavery, 27.6 million are in forced labor and 22 million live in forced marriages. More than half of the slaves are women and girls. Every fourth modern slave is a child.

According to the organization, two-thirds of all slaves in the world live in just ten countries – the United States, India, China, North Korea, Pakistan, Russia, Indonesia, Nigeria, Turkey, Bangladesh. Among parts of the world in terms of the number of slaves, Asia and the Pacific region lead by a wide margin.
