Godzilla Minus Zero is roaring into theaters with a record-breaking opening, driven by an unprecedented share of premium large-format (PLF) and IMAX screens, according to Deadline.
Record-Opening Kaiju Event
The film’s opening marks a record for distributor Gkids. It is the best start ever for a live-action foreign-language film in the United States, surpassing the 2002 Chinese movie Hero. The movie also performed strongly internationally. Japan’s running cume since Tuesday reached $11.8M (or 2.08 billion yen).
Director Takashi Yamazaki’s film is a direct follow-up to the Oscar-winning Godzilla Minus One (2023). It has been met with critical acclaim, holding a score of 92 percent on Rotten Tomatoes from 52 reviews. It earned an A CinemaScore. It also received massive positive scores from PostTrak (85% definite recommend, 95% positive).
Godzilla just needed to let it out. Can relate. Takashi Yamazaki's GODZILLA MINUS ONE (2023) stars Minami Hamabe, Ryûnosuke Kamiki, Sakura Andô, Yuki Yamada, Hidetaka Yoshioka, Munetaka Aoki and Kuranosuke Sasaki. The film won Visual Effects at the 96th Oscars. pic.twitter.com/HG4KSswOUS
Actor Ryunosuke Kamiki told the audience he was both “excited” and a little bit scared
. He could feel people’s anticipation building as the film’s opening is now very close.
Actress Minami Hamabe added that the first film was so beloved by fans all over the world
. For the sequel, she said, we need it to be even bigger and better.
I’m just curious to see how people will receive it,
she added.
The Science of Screen Sound
Audiences are not just seeing Godzilla. They are feeling him. One Australian IMAX attendee reported getting 90 decibel (dB) noise alerts on their smartwatch. They described it as the loudest film they’d ever watched. This experience raises a question: who controls cinema sound levels, and are they safe?

Godzilla Minus Zero is one of the few films specifically filmed for IMAX
. Such films benefit from 12-channel sound systems in IMAX with Laser theatres. This allows for deep bass that gives the monster’s footsteps a tangible presence. It also features surround sound that places environmental effects around the audience.
The sound for the original 1954 Godzilla was created by pulling a resin-covered glove across double bass strings. Composer Akira Ifukube crafted a powerful orchestral style for the beast. He used low tones to convey immense size. He used sharp noises to represent physical power. He used reverb to highlight the creature’s gigantic proportions.

Films are mixed in dedicated dubbing theatres to a strict industry standard. They use a reference level of about 85dB for a test signal. However, cinemas are not legally bound to preserve that exact volume. They often adjust it based on audience comfort and theatre acoustics. A brief burst of loud sound is unlikely to cause permanent damage. But hearing experts note that prolonged exposure to noise at or above 85 dBA can lead to irreversible noise-induced hearing loss. No cinema soundtrack would consistently be this loud. Immediate permanent damage from a single sound is highly unlikely. It occurs at levels above 140dB.
A Theatrical Spectacle
The film’s release has been a major theatrical event. It played as the centerpiece film
at the Tokyo International Film Festival. It drew sold-out screenings with some of the liveliest crowds of the event. The film’s premiere at the New York Film Festival also garnered rave reviews. The Hollywood Reporter called it a radioactive blast
and a crackling kaiju epic every bit as exciting as its predecessor.

In the movie, the hard-won peace of the Shikishima family is disrupted by a fresh disaster. The narrative also introduces King Ghidorah. The iconic three-headed kaiju rival from the franchise appears in Yamazaki’s postwar setting.
GKIDS opened Godzilla Minus Zero in North American cinemas on November 6. Imax early-access screenings began on November 3. The film’s box office performance is being closely watched. Its record PLF and IMAX share signals a strong appetite for premium cinematic experiences.

Star leads Ryunosuke Kamiki and Minami Hamabe appeared on stage to introduce the Tokyo festival screenings. Kamiki said, Together, we play the Shikishima family, and that wouldn’t be complete without our Akiko,
as the little girl joined them and said hello to the audience. Kamiki added, [Our family] is trying to always think of family first. But when Godzilla appears, we have to try to protect the family and that leads to some very hard decisions.
Hamabe said, I’m very happy to have met you all here today, and I hope you will enjoy the story of what happens to the Shikishima family — and also, the Godzilla experience, of course!
