The Valkyries defense recorded 12 steals in the victory. The Valkyries grabbed a 53-47 advantage during their third-quarter surge, and Veronica Burton later gave Golden State a 71-69 lead with a 9-foot floater with 1:12 remaining. In overtime, Gabby Williams extended the lead by draining a jump shot from just beyond the free-throw line to make it 81-73 with 54.2 seconds left.
How did the defending champions respond down the stretch?
The third-seeded Aces, who had won three of the past four championships, fought back from a deficit after trailing by six points late in the game. Newly awarded five-time MVP A’ja Wilson scored 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, though she shot 6-of-19 from the field. Jackie Young added 18 points and Chelsea Gray finished with 17. Gray delivered a pass to Young for a wide-open layup under the basket with 26.6 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter to tie the game 71-71 and force overtime.
