The Burkinabè government on Thursday evening denied reports that Defense Minister Barthélémy Simporé had been arrested.

“False information reporting the arrest of the Minister of State, Minister of Defense Brigadier General Aimé Barthélémy Simporé has been circulating since this afternoon (Thursday) on social networks and is unfortunately taken up by certain media”, added wrote the government in a press release.

The government “challenges the authors of this false information and recalls that they expose themselves to penalties provided for by law”, specifies the same source.

Thursday evening, Burkinabè Internet users relayed information attributed to Burkinabè media reporting the arrest of Simporé.

The media quoted have also denied the information.

Simporé was the last Minister in charge of Defense of former President Roch Marc Christian Kaboré, who was reappointed by the military in power, to everyone’s surprise after the January 24 coup.
