Great drama… but who dares?

Day after day, it becomes clear that the visual and audio sources of culture are the primary source from which people draw to form their knowledge.

Today, those who read a book, a scientific paper, or even a solid newspaper article are decreasing, compared to those who derive their culture from films, documentary series, or even dramas. Hence, investment in this industry becomes a goal for those seeking profit and trade, just as it is a primary goal for those who want to influence taste. The public and opinion in general… for a purpose more important, deeper and more comprehensive than the goal of direct profit.

Yes, there are dramatic works – I will not talk about documentaries, as that is another study – that cost a lot of money and studies, in “mastering” the story’s temporal environment, vocabulary such as:

Dialect, body language, fashion, culture of hospitality, culture of travel, culture of war, types of weapons, and other details, which the more work makers master, the more lasting, lasting, and enjoyable the work.

Last Ramadan, the series “The Assassins” dominated some of the controversy, discussion, and follow-up, and it was previously talked about here, but I was caught by the comment of the director of the work, the Egyptian director Peter Mimi, about the behind-the-scenes production of the work and the huge budget it required. Peter said, in his beautiful Egyptian accent: “ When the production company first talked to me about the work, I told them that I would come to sit with you because I did not want to do 30 more episodes, especially after trying out the series (The Choice), and in the first working session that brought me together with the production company, the first question I asked them was: Do you know how much budget this work needs?… The answer was clear: We want to create an Egyptian industry that we can be proud of… and all capabilities were provided.”

Commercial returns are sometimes tempting to produce huge works. For example, the famous “Vikings” series, with its many parts, brought profits to its creators even though its first season alone cost a budget of $40 million.

But there are indirect, and even explicit, non-commercial returns to producing huge works of this kind, which are: creating an artistic taste for the public, then managing this taste and investing in it with other works.

Also, non-commercial profits, and perhaps more important than commercial profits, are influencing people’s minds and cultures in favor of specific issues, and these are usually behind major support and production bodies such as government institutions or non-profit civil organizations, and I do not know about the strength of these bodies in our Arab world.

Finally, what about production of this kind in the Gulf countries…does it exist?
