The Bank of the Republic of Haiti (BRH) is one of the few institutions still operating in the center of the capital, despite the presence of armed gangs. A group of “bandits” attacked the offices on Monday, a source told AFP on condition of anonymity.
“Our guards, in cooperation with the police and the army, repelled the attack. Three or four robbers were killed,” he added.
One of the BRH security guards was injured by a bullet.
BRH expressed its gratitude to the rangers and police “for their vigilance and continued commitment to protecting the community” via the X platform. The security forces and guards of the building “acted with professionalism and efficiency”, he stressed.
Since the beginning of the month, Haiti has been experiencing a period of deep security crisis after several gangs joined forces to attack strategic points in Port-au-Prince, targeting Prime Minister Ariel Henri. The latter failed to return to his country from Kenya where he was visiting. He announced his resignation on March 11, noting that his government will continue to manage current issues until a transitional presidential council is formed. Haitians have been waiting ever since for the formation of this transitional government.
