The Colombian President, Gustavo Petro, returned to defend the ex-president of Peru, Peter Castillo, assuring that he was “a man cornered by a corrupt political class.” These statements were made in a conversation held at Stanford University, in USA.

The Colombian ruler referred to Castillo’s prison situation when answering a question from an assistant who asked him why he defended the president when the international community condemned the closure of Congress in December 2022. “I don’t want to get into domestic politics, but I have already been declared persona non grata; Then I’ll do it”, he pointed.

After that, he argued that the former president was removed without a criminal trial with a sentence. “Why did he lose his political rights if he was the president elected by the majority of the people? Why now dozens of Peruvians are killed, ”he said.

He also maintained that the former union leader represented the indigenous people who have historically been made invisible in Peruvian politics. “Castillo is the president of Peru de la sierra,” he stressed.
