The Palestinian militant group Hamas has outlined its vision for the second phase of the Gaza ceasefire agreement, offering to release all hostages on certain conditions. This proposal comes after pressure from both US President Donald Trump, who opposed the gradual liberation of prisoners, and families in Gaza who demanded the immediate release of their loved ones.
Conditions for Prisoner Exchange
“We are ready for the second stage where the prisoners will be exchanged at once, wiht the criteria of reaching an agreement that leads to a permanent ceasefire and full withdrawal from the Gaza Strip,” said Hamas Spokesperson Hazem Qassem.
Hamas’s statement also firmly rejected Israel’s demands to disarm and withdraw from Gaza. “The requirement for occupation to get rid of Hamas from the Gaza Strip is a ridiculous psychological war, and withdrawal or disarmament of resistance weapons from Gaza is unacceptable,” Qassem stated.
He emphasized that any future arrangements regarding Gaza’s future must be made through national consensus.
Escalation of Prisoner Release
In a exhibition of commitment to the ceasefire agreement, Hamas recently increased the number of prisoners to be released during the upcoming exchange on Saturday from three to six individuals. “Making the number of prisoners to be released is carried out in response to the request of the mediators and to prove our seriousness in carrying out all the provisions of the agreement,” Qassem explained.
In exchange, Israel has pledged to release a number of prisoners serving long sentences, including those with life sentences.
The ongoing negotiations surrounding the prisoner exchange highlight the complex dynamics at play in the Israeli-palestinian conflict. While the ceasefire offers a temporary respite, the underlying issues remain unresolved, demanding continued dialog and commitment to achieving a lasting peace.
Given Hamas’ insistence on maintaining its resistance capabilities as a non-negotiable condition, how do they reconcile this stance with their stated desire for peace and stability in the region?
