From today there are Handball World Cup!
From January 11th, the sports world will be drawn to Poland and Sweden, where the handball world championship will be held until the final on January 29th. But which group should Germany be in? And when are the games? Below you will find an overview of all teams, groups and games.
32 teams from five different continents are represented at the World Cup, divided into eight groups of four countries each. Four venues will be played in Poland and five in Sweden. It starts on January 11th with the opening game between Olympic champions France and hosts Poland.
The German national team meets Qatar, Serbia and Algeria in Group E of the 2023 Handball World Championship. DHB captain Johannes Golla (25 years old) states: “We are definitely up to the opponents in terms of sport.”
If the German team survives the group phase, the three qualifiers of Group F with Norway, Macedonia, Argentina and the Netherlands are waiting in the main round.
Modus
For the second time the world championship takes place with 32 teams. In the run-up to the World Cup, the teams were divided into eight preliminary round groups, each consisting of four teams. The top three teams in each group qualify for the main round, in which four groups of six are formed. The main round will be held in Katowice, Kraków, Malmö and Gothenburg.
Even for the worst teams in the group stage, the tournament is not over yet. These eight nations are fighting for places 25-32 in the Presidents Cup.
In the main round, the two best teams in each of the four groups qualify for the quarter-finals. These eight nations are not only fighting for the World Cup title, but also for places in the 2024 Olympic qualification tournaments. Therefore, the losers of the quarter-finals also have to fight for places five to eight in placement games.
Presidents Cup
The worst teams of the preliminary round fight for places 25-32 in the so-called Presidents Cup. The games will be played from January 18th to 23rd, 2023 and the cup will take place in two phases.
- The first phase is the placement round. Here it is determined which team plays for which position in the slot machine game.
- After the matches for the games for places 25, 27, 29 and 31 have been determined, the respective placement games take place in phase two.
