Hang up immediately: consumer advice center warns of perfidious telephone fraud

The consumer advice center warns of a new telephone scam. Read here which calls are currently best for you to hang up directly.

There are currently increasing reports of a new phone rip-off: Like that Consumer center writes, the fraudsters pretend to be lawyers from the consumer advice center. The alleged reasons for the calls are varied.

For example, a fee refund from banks or savings banks is used to get sensitive user data. Others try it with alleged surveys, advice on reducing energy costs or a change in the law on life insurance. According to user reports, other scammers are offering alleged sweepstakes listing removals, for which they charge a fee of €150.

Especially bold: The scammers use so-called Call-ID-Spoofing. The real number of the consumer advice center is displayed to the called party on the telephone.

It becomes even more dangerous when the callers talk about alleged account seizures or lawsuits that would threaten if sweepstakes bills are not paid.

For example, an elderly woman was threatened that law enforcement officers would come to her if she did not hand over all her savings to the scammers. After the phone calls, the woman paid around 16,000 euros to an alleged messenger from VZ.

In another scam, the callers inform about an alleged debt collection claim that is to be paid immediately in cash. Here, too, a “security officer from the consumer advice center” comes to the victim to collect the money. A consumer from Frankfurt am Main lost 5,000 euros in this way.
